Don't give me any of your St. Louis style pizza! This place gives me the option to have great tasting toppings on a pizza that isn't as thin as a cracker. Yes, you can get thin crust here, but why? The best part of a pizza is in the flavor of the crust. If it is so thin that the toppings overwhelm it then you might as well not waste your time. The double crusted bacon cheeseburger is one of the most unique, filling, and fun pizzas you can get. It is a like a huge pizza sized calzone that fulfills every meat eaters greatest desires. I have also had their personal size pizzas that are just the right size for one person. The garlic chicken and the Franco's Cajun Pride are both great specialty pizzas even though the garlic chicken could have used some more toppings. This is now easily the best South County pizza place to get your non-standard, non-St. Louis style pizza.

I was so happy when I drove past this pizzeria! I live close to the area and am always happy to find a new local restaurant. Plus pizza is my favorite food! My fiancé and I eagerly tried Joanie's on a Friday night for date night. The inside is cozy and clean. There is a counter where you order. A previous reviewer hit the nail on the head: You sit, you look at menu, you go up to counter, you order, they bring food to you, you get your drink. It's very similar to the St. Louis Bread Co. (I refuse to call it Panera!) experience except they bring the food to you. We ordered the cheese garlic bread and each got an individual-size hand-tossed pizza. The garlic bread was OK. The pizzas were yummy and fit the bill. Employees were MIA at various points of the night and I had to reach behind the counter to get a to-go container after several minutes of waiting at the counter with no help. They advertise to be a casual pizzeria, so don't try to make it what it isn't. I realized it's not a date night spot, but probably a good place to grab a bite during work or weekend errands. That said, it's a touch expensive (personal pizzas starting at about $10+) for a casual meal. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to return. That said, if we are in the area and have a particular craving for pizza (which is likely to happen), I will stop by again.

Bottom Line: Mediocre product, "Panera"-style dining without the silverware and plates, all in a business being operated by youth. Review Details: This review covers a Monday evening visit during early August 2012; dining inside. Ordered Pizza Margherita with hand-tossed crust, a large Joanie's Italian Salad, and a couple of sodas. Overview: I have been here on three separate occasions. Once for take-out pizza, once to order pizza at five minutes to close and walked away with nothing (more about that later), and last night for a dine-in meal. Atmosphere: The colors and lighting make this room almost a "Panera" carbon copy. However, here you have two TVs and a display cooler. Other than that, you sit down, choose your meal, get up and place your order, sit down, and the food is brought you. Oh, and drinks are all on you too. Most or all the employees on this evening seemed to be "kids"; teens and early 20s folks. That is fine, but they were having social hour with some patrons who were friends. Service did not suffer, but it just didn't look like folks had much to do. Food: Joanie's Italian Salad: Menu description: Fresh leaf lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Artichokes, Black Olives and Parmesan Cheese, topped with our Herb Butter Croutons. Happily, I discovered this salad came with green leaf lettuce (no iceberg! hooray!). This item was the highlight of the evening. Positives: the lettuce, red onion, and tomatoes were fresh, and the herb butter croutons - quite tasty. Disappointments here: tomatoes were grape tomatoes that were not sliced, the base of the artichoke was put into the salad. Pizza Margherita: The pizza was pretty much just an O-K pizza. It was not well done, as I requested. Kinda doughy, to be honest. The hand-tossed version was just a bit thicker, which was fine. However, I just could not help think that this was like a homemade pizza from a box. And I am thinking of the sauce here. With this pizza being a simple pizza, the sauce has to be good. It was just really average, in my opinion. Drinks: They offer Pepsi products (cheap) and InBev beers in bottles, along with some other girly bottled drinks. Dessert: I didn't have any, but pies were in the display case, if you so choose to have a "topper". Summary: What brought me out to Joanie's was a discount, on both occasions. I was happy I tried it, and I still would come back for something different. The dining room was somewhat comfortable. And the service was generally friendly. A couple of gripes though... Wow. If there was a rating for environmentally-friendly restaurants, this place would get an 'F'. EVERYTHING was throwaway, except the pizza pan. It cheapened the meal for me. The "meat" trays for plates was the topper (see photos). Plastic silverware; how I loathe it. But, paper trays??? Am I eating nachos at the ballpark? No, I am having a dinner. One last thing, I came to Joanie's for a take out pizza one evening early to mid-week. The clock said five minutes to ten. When I walked up, some young guy was walking out who looked like he worked there. I asked him if they were open; "I think they're closed." I looked the phone number up and called; no answer, even though the lights were on and people were in there. OK, so it is really late, but do you want my business? I guess not. Even though your hours are until 10pm (on this particular evening).

Tried the thin crust Franco's Cajun Pride - seasoned beef, green peppers, onions, black olives, cayenne pepper. Very good. A little hot but good. Seems like Joanie's always uses good ingredients. Also recommend Johnny's Meat Pie.

Wanted to be really impressed, but the pizza was just ok. Not bad, but not great either. We have so many pizza places in this area, we were definitely in the mood for something new/different since we love a weekend pizza night around here. Might give it another try though.

I was very disappointed, but they did do a few things right. We had a pepperoni and sausage pizza, a salad with house dressing and toasted ravioli. This is a special ($19) and is plenty to feed the three of us. All the ingredients were fresh. The salad was huge and would have been excellent if I liked the dressing. It was very vinegary and sour, much in need of an offset of some kind. For the pizza, the thin crust, cheese (mozzarella) and meat were all fine, but the sauce was just awful. After much pondering, I came up with Spaghettio's sauce - that's almost exactly what it tasted like. It ain't right. My 6-year-old daughter said "This pizza is terrible." That's the second time ever she didn't like pizza. For the ravioli, we got half meat and half spinach/artichoke. They were just okay - a little limp, actually. The marinara served with them was really good, so I used it on my pizza to overwhelm the Spaghettio sauce. Service was friendly and kudo's for participating in Dine Out for the Cure. I'd like to come back, but I don't think the sauce is going to change, so definitely not for pizza. I could see returning for a salad with ranch dressing or something.

I have both dined in here and ordered carry out, and I've been happy every time. I don't get traditonal pizzas but instead opt for their BBQ or bacon cheeseburger pizzas. The bacon cheeseburger is really good - especially as a "double crust," which is my favorite. I also really like the BBQ, but I prefer it only single crust. Not sure why! Before going to dine in, you should know this is a very casual restauarant. You order at the counter and then sit down and wait on your pizza. There isn't a lot of seating, but I have yet to be there when it's full. The major downside I see is that they don't use plates but instead just bring out paper-boat-type things that make me think of old-time ballpark nachos. I'd prefer at least a paper plate over those. But the excellent pizza helps offset that in my opinion. As for carryout, the pizza has always been ready when they told me it would be, and it's still hot and delcious when I get home. I can't ask for much more than that.

Good pizzas, especially if you are looking for something beyond the traditional choices. The pizzas, calzones, and sandwiches are all tasty. The Soulard location is out of the way for us, so glad to see they opened a South County location. The in-store location does serve alcohol, although we usually just call for delivery. You'll pay a few more bucks than the standard chains, but it's worth it for local and fresh IMO.

I took my grandparents out for a nice Sunday dinner and had had good pizza from Joanie's a few times before. We dined in and ordered the chicken pesto margherita pizza, some cheese garlic bread, and a large house salad. The pizza was good: a pesto base, some Italian seasonings and Parmesan cheese, with sliced tomatoes on top. Personally, I've preferred the Cajun pizza in the past, but that was not for this occasion. Joanie was working there that night, and she and the rest of the staff were understanding of my grandfather's situation. I would say, though, that carry-out is a better option although they do have some space for dining in. As other reviewers have mentioned, you order at the counter, and at least on this night, they did not have plates but only paper salad/appetizer boats.
